As a Member there is so much to learn and do in the calligraphic arts! The Calligraphic Arts Guild of Toronto (CAGT) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for the continuing study of calligraphy, its history, cultural traditions, and applications for all ages. From enthusiastic beginner to professional scribe, we extend our passion for hand lettering through shared knowledge, instruction, exhibitions and community arts events.
As the Guild marks a 50 year milestone, a range of traditional western scripts are studied: Roman Capitals, Uncial, Carolingian, Gothic, Italic, Foundational, Copperplate and Spencerian along with many contemporary forms. Art forms supporting our skill sets including painting, illumination, flourishing, illustration, book making, printmaking and paper arts are also explored. Check out our current courses! Learn
As a Resident Group at Neilson Park Creative Centre for over 20 years, CAGT Members enjoy the benefits of monthly meetings, library access, studio facilities, arts discounts and events that foster the interchange of ideas and techniques. Please register through the Neilson Park Creative Centre website directly, or the NPCC reception.
Our Guild was founded in 1974 by Alf Ebsen. His love and enthusiasm for the pen led him to develop the ‘Canadian System of Handwriting’, a basic Italic script easy to teach and learn. (Alf’s Biography available to download below)
