Description

In this 2.5-hour workshop, you will learn:

  • 6 ways to add colour to your black sumi marks
  • 6 techniques for creating backgrounds for your sumi marks with various water-based media

You will receive an instructional packet for the twelve techniques and a set of sumi marks for creating your sample pieces. You will come away with twelve ideas for creating lively works of colourful, Asian-inspired art.

Instructor Information

Sally Penley is a graphic designer and lettering artist living in Olympia, WA who has had a wonderful calligraphic journey and career making marks and art.

Sally has periodic solo shows and curates other artists’ shows at the Buck’s 5th Avenue Loft Gallery (209 5th Ave. SE, Olympia WA), where she also has a studio and teaches classes.

Materials

Calligraphy Kit
Additional supplies. Note: this is a comprehensive list if you want to try each technique, but you may not need everything.
• Pan watercolours (like Prang) OR pan gouache (like Pelikan) and gold metallic watercolour
• Brushes: 1” brush, #3 round brush and a small brush for detail work (0 or 00)
• 2” foam brush
• Pad of 9 x 12″ (or 11 x 14″) watercolour paper (plus some Arches Text Wove if you have it)
• Soft pastel sticks and a paper plate
• Kneaded eraser (not a plastic eraser)
• A few cotton balls and Q-tips
• Coloured pencils and graphite pencil (suggest Blackwing)
• Small pieces of decorative washi paper (flecked rice paper, mulberry paper or Chiyogami)
• Plastic wrap
• 1” wide tape for delicate surfaces (e.g., yellow Frog Tape)
• Spray isopropyl alcohol (available from your pharmacy)
• Salt shaker
• X-acto knife
• Water container (wide-mouth to accommodate the 2” foam brush)
• Paper towels

After registration is confirmed, students will be provided with handouts and information.

Prerequisites

Registrants will work with their papers and colour materials on hand as Sally guides us along!

Course Fee

Open to all Members and Friends of CAGT for $40 CDN with current 2020/2021 membership.
Open to Non-Members/Artists for $50 CDN.
