Salman maintains a smaller on-line class so he can spend time and go through the entire script and also individually assist each participant. This allows him to help with the challenges unique to each participant and explain things in more detail.
Spencerian, originally developed as a handwriting system requires a slightly different learning approach than purely calligraphic hands. Students will start with learning the basic structure of the hand at a large size (for Spencerian) and follow with a more flowing execution at a smaller size. Students will study basic forms, as well as some variations from historical references.
Everyone will be provided with printed copies of the instructions as well as the guidelines. The class is limited to 20 students and will be recorded for students that miss a session. In addition, Salman will provide an enhanced forum for learning with critiques and feedback to individual students.
Salman has been practicing Calligraphy since he was a teenager. He started a serious study of Arabic and Western Calligraphy 15 years ago and has been teaching both online and in person workshops throughout Toronto for the past 5 years. He also co-hosts the monthly Toronto Calligraphy Meetup currently being held at Paper Plus Cloth every 3rd Wednesday of the month. As a member of the Calligraphic Arts Guild of Toronto, Salman practices and teaches a number of scripts including Uncial, Gothic styles (Batarde, Fraktur, Blacketter (Textura)), Italic and Foundational as well as Copperplate, Engrosser’s script and Spencerian. You can see examples of his work at www.expressions-art.com/ca.
• Sharp Pencil: Mechanical pencil works well
• Holder: straight or oblique (straight preferred)
• Pointed Flexible nibs: Hunt 22, 101 recommended, any of the G nibs work well too. Please prepare them to take ink before the class.
• Ink: Walnut Ink, Pelikan Black, or other of your choice
• Paper: Rhodia recommended but any that takes ink well is good. It will be great if you can have a few pages printed with the guidelines that will be provided in pdf format before the class.
Material available for purchase with the class – Practice worksheets for Spencerian & Copperplate
Any other important info? Salman suggests to “Practice daily even it is just a few minutes. Never let a day go by without putting ink on paper.”
