With an eye on the history of Italics from the 15th century, this course follows the development of the Italic letterform, then dabbles in some of its countless variations that personify it. From elegant to festive, the italic form is the most playful.

In this class we will be inspired by some of the the most renown calligraphers of our time to produce three projects using historic and contemporary pigments, working on both white and black surfaces. Some calligraphic experience is helpful for this course, but not necessary. We will review the Canadian style briefly to familiarize ourselves before exploring the modifications.
