Description

What is Modern Calligraphy? A question I have asked myself many times.  There are many types and many tools, with some conflicting definitions..

I have decided that it is a hybrid of the trained development of smooth, scripted letter forms such as copperplate, and attitude. Personality. A certain Je Ne Sais Quoi. Termed ‘Modern’  because of its recent popularity one supposes, or because of the aloof, carefree quality associated with a youth full of new ideas.

With an exemplar as reference, we will learn how to use the pointed pen, chalk and brush markers to create the thick and thin contrasts that make calligraphy so beautiful to  create a small slate and an occasion card with envelope. Let’s be frivolous together!

Instructor Information

Employed in printing and the graphic arts industry for nearly 40 years, the love of the written word had become a breathing thing for Lee Thureson. Originally taught by one of our Guild’s founders, Nona Brown in 1984, the obsession continued with many noteworthy instructors, notably our own Mark Lurz, the last remaining founder. Lee’s graphic arts career continues digitally in tangent with the freeing spirit of hand lettering. Once an instructor of graphic arts software in 1989, she revels in the opportunity to share the ‘by hand’ craft she so dearly loves. Because writing is no longer a skill taught in the Toronto District School Board; Lee feels compelled to carry the torch.
